Carpet Tile vs Wall to Wall Installation

Carpet Tiles are small swatches of carpet that can be installed and combined in several creative, unique ways. They are also known as “modularity carpets” or ”carpet squares”. Often, they are square shaped and available in range of square sizes- 48X48, 50X50, 60X60, and 96X96 cm. Carpet tiles also come in planks which are long rectangular shapes. Some manufactures will actually offer carpet tiles in a variety of creative shapes. Carpet tiles are easy to carry and transport, making it easier to get to the job site undamaged. Carpet tiles are pre-backed so they can be installed directly onto the subfloor. Therefore, you do not need any underplays. This saves a lot of time and money. They also have less waste when installing. There is less cutting and adjustments in order to fit the space, especially with rooms with odd angles.

When installing carpet tiles you first want to remove the furniture and old flooring in the room. Then fill in any cracks, fix gaps and clean the surface. After that you want to seal the subfloor and mark the center of the room. Then dry fit the tiles so you have an idea how the flooring will look. Once you’ve done that you are ready to install the carpet tiles.

Wall-to-Wall

Wall-to-Wall Carpets cover a calculated amount of space in a few or even one piece of carpet. Wall-to-Wall carpets are usually placed of under felt, over the substrate flooring and attached using small tacks. They create a seamless finish and allows you to be very creative with this type of carpeting. You can choose a custom design because you won't have to deal with breaks in the fabric. The installation of wall-to-wall carpeting is more time consuming than carpet tiles. The waste produced is also a lot greater than tile carpeting.
When installing wall-to-wall you want to clean the subfloor and remove all the doors in the room. You want to the install the tackless strips and carpet padding. You want to staple any pad seams and trim the pad. After that you are you going to trim the carpet to size and trim off any excess carpet. Once that is done you are going to glue the seams together. After that you are going to stretch the carpet and use the binding bar.

  2. Erica,
I think this was an interesting blog post to read about the different methods to installing carpet. I had a similar blog post discussing wall to wall vs tile. I liked how you explained the construction methods more in depth and gave images as to how that happens which is helpful. I think it would be great to hear more on tile installation, but overall I liked your explanation about how carpet can be installed which is something most clients do not take into consideration, but each installation has its pro's and con's. Here are some sources that give more detail into what purposes are wall to wall and tile installations appropriate.

  3. I liked how you discussed in detail the installation methods. It creates a better mental picture of what goes on during installation. I also think it's interesting how many different patterns and types of carpet there are. Even in these two simple categories of wall to wall and tile carpets there are so many different types or subsections.
