Interior Design Studio Remodel

In this area in studio below, we have two big storage cabinets that have a lot of miscellaneous items stored inside. It is very unorganized and difficult to find materials in. We have two of the same large cabinets. My idea for one of them is to create a place to keep some of our fabric samples and materials.  My thought is to remove all of the shelfing units and replace each shelf with a metal pole, so we are able to hang up our samples very easily. This will organize our materials and make it a lot easier on our lives when searching for specific items. We would need a total of 4 metal poles to install into the cabinet and a lot of hangers for our material. The biggest thing to deal with is measuring out the poles to the right size and cutting them, so they can fit into the cabinet. This is not a long process once you have all your items to assemble with and it should only take one, maybe two people to get it done.

This is another area in studio that needs some help. Inside these bookcases are all of the Architecture books and many of them are old and outdated. They really need to be looked at and gone through. It is very unnecessary to take up this space when others are not using these sources. If the Architects are able to go through these books and give a bookcase to the ID studio, I think it would very beneficial to us rather than the books sitting there collecting dust. There is no money needed to be put into this idea. All we need are students or teachers to go through these materials and keep what they want or donate them. That would really help out our studio and provide us with more room to help organize our books and magazines.

  1. Erica,
This is a great analysis of what we can do in studio to remodel our space. I know Kelly had mentioned dowels to hang the fabrics and it is great to see you also mentioning this. Personally, I think the dowel situation can work as it is relatively inexpensive and makes the fabrics look elegant. We definitely have to purge the shelving units with the old architecture references, but i think the images you have of correctly shelving books or catalogs is helpful in moving forward in our organization of the space.

  2. I really like your idea of putting the hangers in the storage units. One major problem in the studio is that things can get dirty so quickly and having the fabrics hung in the unit would keep them cleaner longer which would be great! I'm wondering if we need metal poles, would it be possible to do so with simple wooden dowels? That way if we are on a tighter budget more can go into purchasing the hangers for the samples rather than on the rods. Wooden dowels should suffice strength wise because the distance is not too long.
